The SINOTRUK VGV VX7 is the maiden mid-size pick-up truck introduced by VGV, the passenger vehicle division under SINOTRUK, officially launched on 28 February 2022. The debut of this model marks SINOTRUK VGV's foray beyond the traditional commercial workhorse segment by adopting a "passenger-car-oriented design" philosophy, delivering a vehicle that seamlessly blends the ride refinement of an SUV with the practical cargo-carrying versatility of a pick-up truck.

Model Overview

Positioned as a mid-size lifestyle pick-up truck, the core philosophy of the VX7 centres on reimagining passenger SUV comfort with pick-up practicality. Through a passenger-car-grade interior and an upscale body structure, it effectively sheds the utilitarian "commercial workhorse" stereotype traditionally associated with pick-up trucks.

Market highlights: Lifestyle pick-up truck, SUV-grade interior, ultimate road-trip companion, mid-size pick-up truck.

Design positioning: The exterior styling shares close ties with the brand's U75 PLUS SUV, sporting sleek contours and distinct passenger-vehicle characteristics. Inside, the cabin is fully aligned with modern passenger cars, featuring a large digital instrument cluster, an integrated central infotainment touchscreen, and a rotary gear selector.

Product highlights: The vehicle's key selling point lies in its "unconventional pick-up" character. With premium cabin appointments and ergonomic seating, it elevates ride comfort and technological sophistication, allowing it to cater effortlessly to daily family commutes and cross-country road trips while satisfying cargo-hauling demands.

Development History

Background (2022): With the progressive easing of urban access restrictions on pick-up trucks across China, domestic consumer demand for versatile, multi-purpose pick-ups grew rapidly. As the strategic division driving light commercial and passenger vehicle initiatives within the group, SINOTRUK VGV leveraged its proven SUV architecture to develop and roll out the passenger-focused VX7, aiming to tap into the burgeoning lifestyle family pick-up segment.

Official launch: In February 2022, the VX7 officially hit the market across multiple trim variants, priced between RM110,000 and RM120,000. It quickly garnered industry attention upon debut, with its redefined interior cabin hailed by market observers as a noteworthy benchmark for the evolution of lifestyle pick-up trucks.

Market trajectory: Serving as the trailblazer for the VGV brand's entry into the pick-up arena, the VX7 helped build valuable manufacturing expertise on passenger-oriented platforms. Following this, SINOTRUK VGV expanded its pick-up portfolio with a more diversified model matrix, further strengthening its footprint in this segment.

Market Performance

Competitive landscape: In the RM110,000 to RM120,000 price bracket, the VX7 contends against rivals such as the GWM POER, Changan Lantaz, as well as high-spec variants of commercial pick-ups. Compared to its peers, the VX7's core competitive edge lies in its premium cabin quality, flexible interior packaging, and superior NVH driving refinement.

Customer feedback: Owner reception for the VX7 primarily highlights its "luxurious cabin", "generous interior space", and "light, car-like handling". Many owners have shared that the vehicle drives just like an SUV in daily conditions, making it equally adept for small business operations and outdoor road trips—truly serving as a "hybrid of a pick-up and an SUV".

Core Technology

Powertrain: Powering the vehicle is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering a maximum output of 165 kW (approximately 224 PS) and a peak torque of 385 Nm. The powertrain and transmission are calibrated for smooth, linear delivery, providing ample power reserves for daily urban commuting and long-distance touring alike.

Smart cabin: The vehicle comes equipped with an intelligent connected infotainment system supporting mainstream connectivity features, voice interaction, and cruise control, significantly elevating day-to-day driving convenience.

Body structure and payload: Despite its passenger-oriented architecture, it retains the practical payload capability expected of a pick-up. The rear cargo bed is neatly sculpted and equipped with dedicated tie-down points alongside structural enhancements tailored for outdoor utility, upgrading vehicle versatility without compromising cargo performance.

Future Plans

As of 2026, SINOTRUK VGV has laid down a clear product development roadmap targeting "intelligence, digitalisation, and electrification". As the brand's foundational model, the VX7's passenger-first design philosophy has been seamlessly carried over into subsequent VGV light vehicle and pick-up R&D programmes. Moving forward, backed by the group's technological resources, SINOTRUK VGV will further explore modular platform architectures, focusing on enhancing off-road recovery capabilities and energy efficiency in challenging driving conditions while preserving passenger-car comfort, thereby aligning with global pick-up truck market trends.
